New Construction of the two-story high-resilience building contains the offices of Atherton’s civic departments. This building uses recentering fuses in the foundation grade beams (GB), which allowed project savings by replacing buckling restrained brace (BRB) lateral system by special concentric brace system. Plastic hinge (fuse) formation in the GB will cap the maximum force delivered to the superstructure and recentering is achieved by inclusion of post-tensioned tendons in GBs.
This project also included retrofitting and expansion of the old town hall with inclusion of rammed earth construction in its structural system.
