Half Moon Bay Library

Project executed as Mar Structural Design

Project Description

This new regional library was designed with a careful consideration for material selection.  Structure and skin use naturally weathering materials such as concrete, Cor-Ten steel, wood, copper, zinc, and stone.  The library features acoustically separated areas, a flexible maker space, outdoor reading plazas, and daylit interior spaces.

Advanced FEA modeling enabled efficient design of the second level based on aesthetic and performance.  Optimized balance in force distribution and transfer between wood and steel pieces results in an elegant exposed structure that is embraced in the interior appearance of the space.
